ARE YOU A RED HAT MAMMA?
What is a Red Hatter and how did it all begin?

The Red Hat Society was inspired by "Warning," a poem by British author Jenny Joseph that begins
"When I am an old woman I shall wear purple/
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me."

In 1997, Sue Ellen Cooper of Fullerton, Calif., presented the poem and a vintage red fedora to a friend as a 55th birthday gift.
Five months later, Cooper and five friends decided to wear red hats and purple dresses to afternoon tea in honor of the poem.
As more and more women joined these outings, Cooper encouraged them to start their own groups. A phenomenon -- and for-profit business -- was born.
